Program Description Through the Police Foundations- Advanced Standing program, you will develop the hands-on skills and training necessary to deal with the wide range of situations police officers encounter every day. While policing is a rewarding career, it is also extremely demanding. While completing the extensive experiential learning in our program, you will be exposed to many aspects of policing that will allow you to make an informed decision on the best career choice for you. The placement experience really does set Fleming apart from other police programs at the college level. With our close associations and partnerships with a number of police services, you will have an opportunity to take advantage of a wide variety of placements and practicum experiences. NOTE: Placement experience will be subject to a clearance check by the police service. Field placement may extend beyond the 15-week block in your second semester, (semester four of the two-year program), depending on the experience you choose and the preference of the police service placement. Learn in our new Skills for Justice Simulation Learning Centre. This scenario–based training facility features multiple room settings for recreating crime scenes and /or facilitating scenarios to improve student understanding of police powers, interview and interrogation techniques, traffic management and dispute resolution systems. Fleming College is leading the way in providing specialized training to respond to increasing numbers of mental health calls-for-service. Recent inquests have highlighted that these calls for service can be volatile and often the individual officer’s level of training factors into successfully resolving these situations. Additionally, the curriculum examines a variety of mental health issues faced by college students, front line community services workers and police officers. Students will learn how to identify stressors, symptoms related to stress and how to manage stress effectively. New curriculum addresses the increasing role and expanding job market for civilian policing in Ontario. Tailor your electives to correspond to your career goals – police officer (fitness electives) or civilian staff member (civilian policing electives). For those who choose the fitness electives, your training to prepare for the PREP and PARE tests takes place in our state-of-the-art gym and sports complex. Our program emphasizes the most important skill a police officer can possess; the ability to communicate. The capacity to show assertiveness, diffuse conflict, display empathy and establish rapport and trust are hallmarks of any good police officer. This skill set is not only important in policing, but transferable to nearly any career that involves community interaction. To facilitate learning, course curriculum emphasizes scenario and problem- based instruction.
